Jack Torrance—Wendy Torrance
Doctor SleepJack Torrance and Wendy Torrance are husband and wife whose relationship is marked by the Overlook Hotel’s devastating hold over their family. After the hotel’s boiler explosion, Wendy survives with lasting injuries; the couple’s understanding of Jack’s role is inseparable from their recognition that the Overlook was the force that had turned him against her.
Marriage and the Overlook Winter
During the Overlook Hotel’s winter closure, Jack was its caretaker, and Wendy and their young son were with him. When the boiler exploded, Jack was killed in an attempt to relieve its dangerously high pressure. Wendy and their son survived, as did the hotel’s chef, Richard Hallorann, who had come to check on the family after sensing that they were in trouble. The catastrophe ended the Torrances’ life at the hotel and left Wendy badly injured.
Injury and Its Aftermath
Wendy and her son received a settlement from the corporation that owned the Overlook Hotel. Although a lawyer advised that she might secure substantially more by holding out and pursuing a court case, Wendy wanted to put the winter behind her rather than prolong its aftermath. She convalesced, but the injuries to her back continued to trouble her for the rest of her life. Her recovery was therefore real but incomplete: the family could leave the disaster behind geographically, while its effects remained in her body.
Harm, Responsibility, and Survival
The violence between Jack and Wendy is recalled through its consequences. Jack had swung the mallet that damaged Richard Hallorann’s dentures and left Wendy unable to walk without a hitch in her stride. Yet Hallorann and Wendy understood the Overlook Hotel to be the deeper cause. This distinction does not erase Jack’s action; it places the marriage’s rupture within the hotel’s corrupting influence, which had turned a family home into a place of danger. Wendy’s survival and decision not to pursue a larger settlement show her effort to move beyond that winter, even as its physical consequences endured.
